Joachim loves people photography – it’s what drives him! His passion for capturing the essence and personality of people is evident in his wedding photography and portraiture. Words that have been used to describe him are “Enthusiastic”, “Spontaneous”, and “Creative”.
Joachim was born in Germany and came to Canada as a child in the late sixties. He grew up in the Toronto area where he met his high school sweetheart who was instrumental in starting his fascination with photography when she bought him his first camera. “My love for portraiture began while taking endless pictures of my sweetheart”.
Joachim studied photography at Sheridan College in Oakville, and being somewhat shy in those early years, continued to develop his photographic skills on a more casual basis. In 1995 Joachim moved his family to Calgary, where his eldest son eventually started a talent agency. “Seeing the poor headshot photography my son was contracting convinced me to pick up the camera once more”. Joachim immediately found his somewhat dormant passion for photography spring alive in a very powerful way, which led to the formation of “Images by Schubert” in 1998. He was able to convince a recently married co-worker, to pose in his makeshift basement studio for Bridal pictures, which formed the basis of his first portfolio. During the next few years that followed Joachim shot many weddings and portrait sessions while honing his skills in order to emerge a disciplined, confident photographer.
The journey took a giant leap forward when he embraced digital photography. Joachim found his style melded perfectly with this new medium. “Now every detail of a wedding could be captured without restrictions.” Joachim has done several hundred weddings and dozens portraiture sittings in various Canadian cities and towns. His style of photography really defies categorization: “I like to capture things as they unfold, with minimal posing. I want people to feel relaxed and at ease in front of the lens. I don’t let my camera get in the way of my subject”.
Joachim has done a lot of event photography, ranging from corporate Christmas party portraiture and headshots, and Theatre photography for Liffey Players, Morpheus Theater, and Bonavista Players.
Joachim met Jason Sullivan (Tanami Photography) in 2000 where a good friendship and strong working relationship developed. “I’m excited to be a part of Tanami Photography as we continue to build a skilled, professional photography organization. It gives me the opportunity to continue further with my love of people photography, as well as expand into other creative and exciting areas of photography.”
